The theme of Thursday was that slavery was a major issue in the United States in the first half of the 19th century. Many proposed solutions to this problem but none worked. Nobody could agree on anything that actually solved the problem of slavery; the best legislators could do was put off the problem to another day. This problem grew even larger because of the addition of all of these western territories. The question in Congress soon became whether or not slavery would be allowed in the new territories west of the Mississippi River. This leads directly into our next unit (and final unit that I will be teaching) the Civil War.
Here is the PowerPoint with notes about slavery in the western territories:
We will review our westward expansion unit on Monday, and our unit test is on Tuesday. Those who are missing school on Tuesday for the field trip will have the opportunity to make up the test before school, during study hall, or during class on Wednesday.
