Paragraph Writing… SS Style

One of 7th grade social studies’ focal points is writing. Even outside the LA classroom, you have to write! We use the following format:

  • First sentence needs to be a “hook,” something to “grab” people’s attention.
  • The next 3-4 sentences should include at least 3 facts.
  • End with a statement that wraps up your main thesis and concludes your paragraph nicely. Even better if it mirrors the “hook.”

An example, courtesy of 2nd Period…

Do you want to be eaten by cannibals? Of course not, so we have government to protect us. In a state of nature, we have no rights, and chaos reigns. Government gives us laws and protects our rights. Because we have rights, we may pursue a life of happiness. Additionally, we have a say in government, and it reflects our will. Now, even if you wanted to be, you couldn’t be eaten by a cannibal. We have a government to protect you – and your stupid choices!!

This paragraph’s thesis is: Do you want to be eaten by cannibals? Of course not, so we have government to protect us.

The Facts are clear:

  1. In a state of nature, we have no rights, and chaos reigns. Government gives us laws and protects our rights.
  2. Because we have rights, we may pursue a life of happiness.
  3. Additionally, we have a say in government, and it reflects our will.

And our summary/conclusion: Now, even if you wanted to be, you couldn’t be eaten by a cannibal. We have a government to protect you – and your stupid choices!!
