For the Common Good…

We’ve been learning for the last week about reasons for government, including doing things for the “common good.”  That is, helping your community to make it a better place.  There are an infinite number of ways you can do this, but every now and then, special opportunities arise.  Additionally, when those opportunities make for profound learning experiences, we have a great civics project!

Ride Janie Ride is a charitable organization that we are raising funds for, and on that has some special Lakeview connections.  RJR is a charity that selects recipients, raises funds, and gives the funds directly to the recipients.  Unlike other large, national-based charities, the  proceeds go directly to the people who need them.  And additionally, we have faces to match the names:

Additionally, our District has some special connections to this year’s recipients.  Kayla O’Leary is a 3rd Grader at Prarieview, and many of our 7th graders know her personally. Anthony Nino is the brother-in-law of Mrs. Nino, our 7th grade teacher at Lakeview.  What makes this fund raising effort so much more personal is that we KNOW them.  Aside from saving and changing the lives of these people, KNOW who they are.   Being a part of our community means that helping them is serving the common good, a critical component of being a responsible citizen.  We can – and should – be invested in helping them, given that RJR has selected them as worthy recipients of their fundraising efforts.

How does this connect to class? Easy!  This is now a civics project.  Students are challenged to put into practice the ideals of “common good” that we’ve already learned in class.  Over the next week, we’ll have a half day, beautiful weather, and constant reminders to help those in our community that need us.  What can our students do for them, for the common good?  Additionally, how can our student learn how to be good citizens, while inspiring their community?

Peter P. inspired me this morning.  Peter printed a flier from the RJR website, went to church, and collected $120 all by himself!  Additionally, Peter has given $80 of his own money to the cause, something few students have done.  Peter reminded me of the power that students have, and my responsibility to awaken that power so that they can better learn to work for the common good.  As their civics teacher, it is my job to help instill values in the students that make good citizens; this is an example.  Peter did this for his admiration of Mrs. Nino, an amazing teacher (also doing work for the common good – see how that works?!), but also for his sense of doing the right thing for his community.

Also to be admired are Jacky J., Rebecca A., Rebekah O., Jeannie L., and Serenity S.  These girls went door-to-door in their neighborhood and raised a total of $250 between them!  They’re not just special young ladies that value their community, but they are WILLING to do something for it!

The challenge for students this week is to sacrifice the time, X-Box, Facebook, etc., and do something great for their community, for the common good.  Students should post in the comments below their stories of what they did for the common good.  They may include this Ride Janie Ride effort as an example, or their own previous efforts for other causes.  What is YOUR example of what you have done for the common good?

Students will be exempt from homework tonight, 4/19, should they show proof of their sufficient work towards the common good.

What an amazing idea, Mr. Little! I can’t wait to see what kind of projects students come up with. Way to go with your RJR fundraising 7th graders!!!

This past weekend was a giving weekend. On Saturday April 17, 2010, I assisted at a P.A.D.S. shelter for 3.5 hours. My main job was to set up the beds for the 40+ homeless people who needed a warm place to stay. When that was finished, I was serving food and beverages to each of the unfortunate people.
It was a real eye-opening experience!
This shelter was at St. Mary of Cell in Berwyn. The homeless who use this shelter are only able to stay here on Saturday nights. Other nights they must walk to another suburb for shelter.
On Sunday I was helping at my church for the St. Vincent DePaul Society where I helped collect used material for the under priviliged people.
These experiences taught me that one person really can make a difference to someone else.

    Dear Mr.Little

I think our time that we spent raising money for these people is wonderful, but also – we put our hearts into this. One girl, Kayla, is a 3rd grader in our district, but also for Mrs.Nino’s brother-in-law benefit from this. Our efforts are really heart warming but we’re also helping a 2 year old! Today, Clar, Bri, and I went to Wal-mart just to get money for these special people. I can’t wait until they find out how much Lakeview students care about them! GO SPARTANS!

made a poster and went door to door raising money! and soon me and my friends will go to a store and ask them to support ride janie ride! :)

Me and Caitlyn will be going around my neighborhood and trying to raise money. Hopefully we can get a get a lot of money raised but every penny counts. We were also thinking, since Caitlyn plays the harp, try to do a little benefit concert someplace. Hopefully some people will donate there to. I think this is a great cause to donate to and our school is doing a great job!!!

Today I am going to go door to door and make a poster for the Ride Janie Ride. I am also going to have a lemonade stand. I will email people to ask them for donation. On Thursday I will bring Kayla Support Team wristbands to handout at school. That is what I am going to do for the Ride Janie Ride fundraiser.

I got some money from my family for the ridejanieride, and helped teach some 2nd graders in my church about God. I also had my CCD class with me so it was a group project and we told them to make what they see as god…..out of Play-dough. then we gave them some prayer rocks and told them that we would pray for them during their first Communion.

What I did for the common good is help out churches in helping kids out for there communion and for the may crowning. another thing i did was raise money for ride jenie ride. i did this to help the kids feel proud of themselves. And for Ride Jenine ride I’m proud of helping to treat people who have cancer.

The biggest thing i have ever done for the common good was raise over 5,000 $ for an animal shelter in my neighborhood. instead of asking for Christmas presents, i ask for people to donate instead of spending money on the presents. people donate through my website. the animal shelter has a plaque of my name in front of it, which makes me feel good to think i would help animals instead of just using the worthless presents. i have been raising money since 4th grade. but now im starting to donate for ride Janie ride because i know the little girl, Kayla, ever since my little brother started playing basketball. she was extremely friendly and came right up to talk to me. she’s full of energy and just so nice to be around. she’s just a delightful person in general. my only question is, why her? so now i have printed her webpage and and my mom is giving it to people in her work, and i want to see if my mom can announce ride janie ride on city hall tv because my mom works for city hall. thank you!

Hey Mr. Little! As you know, I’m selling duct tape flower pens. But I’m also going with Angie M., Joe M., Austin A., and Marwa C. to local shops for donations and leaving flyers for online donations tomorrow after early dismissal. Plus, outside one of those shops, I’ll also be selling the flower pens(with permission of course)!! I hope we can raise money for this great cause!!!!

One thing i’ve done for the Common Good is at my Church on Easter sunday. Me and my Brother and a few others provided a breakfast for 5 homeless people and 39 very very sick people we made eggs, pancakes, orange juice, and juicy, greasy BACON!!!!!!! and it was cool so it was awesome

  12. Allyssa S.

What I did for the common good is make a small stand outside of a mall and collect money with a few friens. I also gathered a few jars and printed a few flyers out to tape to the jars and put the jars inside a few stores and hotels. I am planning to pick them up Thursday night. I’m doing this because my cousin who was 3 when it happened, died from this and I want to help them because i wasn’t there for my cousin when it happened and I felt horrible. I want to help.

Cool smiley! Good job raising money!

  16. Kelsey O.

Today Bri , Amber, and I are going around all three of our neighborhoods and asking people to support and donate money for Ride Janie ride. We made fliers and posters to promote the cause too. We are planning to make a difference.

  17. Richard G

In the past, I’ve done alot for the common. One thing I’ve done is put away my nieghbors groceries and shoveled they’re driveway in the winter. Me and Dan N. are planning to go to his Grandpa’s nieghborhood on the half-day tommmorow to raise $ for the Ride Janie Ride foundation.

P.S.- Peter your awesome for raising $300

  18. Dan N.

For the upcoming early dismissal day. My friends and I are going to split into two groups and go door-to-door at my grandparents neighborhood. Once were done there then we will go by my neighborhood and collect some more money. We will make posters and brochures to give to people who donate some money. We will try to make at least 100 dollars per person. Which would total to about 400 dollars for the Ride Janie Ride foundation for blood cancer.

  19. Jeremy J.

For the last year I have helped people take their garbage out, helped them with groceries and put them away. I’m going to go around my neighborhood with my friends and i hope people help us and don’t say no to the people for Ride Janie Ride. Also Peter Pinos is really awesome for bringing more than $300 and I think that is one of the best people to help out. I’m going to keep helping the common good.

  20. Tiffany B

    Hey Mr. Little.
For the common good and for the Ride Janie Ride Foundation, I will ask my dad to ask his co-workers for donations at his job. I might even go door-to-door around my neighborhood and ask too. I hope I can make some money to help this cause.

  21. Kaival P.

Hey Mr. Little! The biggest thing i have ever done for the common good is I walk around my neighborhood and other neighborhood and raise $205. I added $20 of my money that I saved up. I was out raiseing money 4 hours.

  22. Cole C.

Unfortunatly, I havent gotten around to raising any money for RIDE JANIE RIDE. I probobly should’ve made the time for it, but none the less I did donate twenty dollars. Something i have recently done for the common good was on black friday last year. My friends and I went to four corners just for fun, and we frequently passed salvation army volunteers collecting money. We eventually made a point to donate AT LEAST a dollar everytime we passed one of the volunteers. This may not sound like much, but we were there for six hours just walking around. That can add up. not to mention there were five people total in our group. I hate carrying change or having to much money with me anyway so I got something out of it too.

  23. Emma S.

Wow I can’t believe that the 7th grade has raised more than $2,000!!! Hopefully this Thursday I will go out and raise an amazing amount of money. Being friends with Peter I am very shocked(NOT IN A BAD WAY) that he himself could raise so much money in so little time. And by the way, 7th grade will dominate 6th and 8th grade combined. I hope the three year old,Kayla, and Mrs.Nino’s brother in law get well and live a long and happy life with many years ahead of them. Way to go Peter and many many others!!!!!! One thing I have done for the Common Good was at my old old school we bought presents and put them in shoe boxes and shipped them off to countries that had been badly affected by disaster who had no money, food, shelter,or Christmas presents. It was called “Operation Christmas Child”
It is so sad to see these poor children and young adult dealing with blood cancer.

  24. Bree T.

I went to walmart to raise money for Kayla, Anthony, and Micheal. Me, Kelsey, and Amber going around my neighborhood to get people to donate. I think its good that Kayla, Anthony, and Micheal are tough, because they have alot to go through with cancer. I hope everybody will help us raise money for them!

  25. Athena R

what i did for the common is that i “tried” to raise money for memory walk. when my parents found out the memory walk they help me by going to their work. and ask their coworkers if they donate some money and they did.

  26. Trupti P.

Hi Mr. Little! For Ride Janie Ride, I went to the train station (and I will be planning on going to Ultra Foods, Wal-Mart, Jewel Osco, adn Meijer) to collect money from passing train riders. I have to say that going to the train station wasn’t a very good idea. Most of the people were in a rush, but occasionally someone would donate. I can’t wait do do more for RJR. THANKS AGAIN!

One thing i’ve done for the common good is i went door to door with my friends and raised money for Ride Janie Ride. We spent basically 5 hours raising money and we would go up to a house and say our names and tell them we go to lakeview Junior high and were raising money for Ride Janie Ride. Then we explained what Ride Janie Ride is and asked if they would like to donate so money. We raised a total of $145 so the next day at school we each turned in 50 to our homebases. We were really happy with what we have done, and so were are teacher. Also Thursday were going to go raise more money because it’s a half a day and it will be a good day too. Were going to try to raise more than 145 this time, im sure we will because we will have more time to go out sense it’s a half a day. But i will be really happy if we do :)

  28. Mariah L :]

    Hi Mr. Little,
For Ride Janie Ride, I have went door-to-door asking people for donations. I did this yesterday with 5th graders that are actually friends with Kayla and we raised over $30.

  29. kelsie M.

Alex Liss and I are going out on thursday (since it’s early dissmisal) to raise money for Ride Janie Ride. We made posters so people will see it and want to help out. Alex and I will be going to go to coldstone at 4 corners to try to raise some money.I hope we get alot of donations!

  30. Sean Anderson

We as a school are donating money to Ride Janie Ride. Which is a charity that you donate money to people that are sick with cancer. But the money is split up and given directly to the people. It will save their lives. I am going to ask my family to help us raise money and help them. I will also try going door to door asking them to donate. If that doesn’t work I will go in frount of Meijer and giving out fliers. So far as a school we have raised 5,200 in a week and a half. I can relate to these people because my grandma died of lung cancer.

  31. kelsie M.

I also made a bet with my dance teacher that if my clip stayed in the whole time she would donate $5. I won, shes going to give me the money on thursday!

  32. Nico (Nick K.)

Hey Mr.Little this is Nick and me and Jeff Heffernan raised $47.00 from asking for donations door to door and on Thursday I might go to Starbucks to get donations too. I really hope the money Lakeview raised changes their lives.

  33. Jason

Danny and I have been going door to door a couple days ago. We made an advertisement to show the people we were helping. These people need our help so we kept doing from door to door. On early dismissal, I am going to go to my neighborhood, or four corners, and go help these people have a good life again. I like to help people like going to P.A.D.S and help the poor because I want them to have a good time. Our grade has been doing excellently because our grade wants to help these people feel better again!I am going to help everyone in their time of need for the common good.

  34. justin muhs

Hey guess what?! Me and my school Lakeview Jr. High are raising money for this one chairity that will go to three people in our district – one goes to our elementary school and the other one is a little three year old kid. One of them that really shocked me was Ms. Nino’s brother-in-law. That is one teacher Peter P. is raising money for. He alone raised 10% of the school’s money. Me and some of my friends would like to do a benefit concert for the charity the band and basketball team will preform there all we need is a crowd so if we can get a little help from the actual ride janie ride group and it would be awesome! If the people that are sick would come and say some things about how this will help change them. Well that’s all I have to say and please help raise some money it could just be a dollar to change some one’s life.

  35. Shon T.

What I did for the commen good is that to rise money for Ride Janie Ride by going door to door in my block so I can help them. I am going to do this on Thursday with some of my friends.I hope we get money to give it to them. When I heard about 3 people will die I felt sad so me and my friends decided we would collect money for them on Thursday and theres a half day of school so we got alot of time.Me, Dan,Jermey, and Richard are going to split into a group of two and when we get the money we’er going to split it. Thank you for reading this.

  36. Marina S.

One thing I’ve done for the common good is went door to door for about 3 hours. I told people that I go to Lakeview Junior High and what Ride Janie Ride was. Alot of people donated money and we’re proud to know that they live in a neighborhood with students spending their free time collecting money for Ride Janie Ride (4 people actually said that). As of April 20 I have raised over $145. I am going to turn in the money on Friday. On Thursday, I am going to finish going door to door in my neighborhood and then I am going to go to a common lunch place like Panera to collect more money. My goal is to reach $200, but I am happy with what I will make.

  37. Stephanie G

To help Ride Janie Ride I got money from my family and donated some myself. I also went door to door in my neighborhood. Over the weekend I am going to do a car wash with my friends to help. In total my homebase earned over $700! Just for the common good I cleaned up a park with my friend. The rest of this week I am going to try to raise more money.

  38. Braxton Brown

One thing that myself and about 7 other people have decided to do to help raise money for Ride Janie Ride is to have a junior varsity, varsity basketball game. Mixing up the JV Boys with the V Girls, and the V Boys with the JV Girls.
We are planning on selling tickets for $2 a piece; but our only problem is that we can’t have it at Lakeview because something was already scheduled for the day we were planning on having it. So now we just have to find a place to have the game at and we’re set. Mr.Little said that he would help us out if we got everything planned and written down, and that’s all we need.

  39. clar :D

Mr. Little… me, Bree, and Vikki went to Walmart to raise money but they wouldn’t let us so I’m going to try again with Twon and Alyssa… this time we might go to neighborhoods… And this time we’ll try to make more then Peter!!!!!!! (not possible!) We’re not doing this so we can get a cut of the money (witch we CAN’T) We’re doing this to benefit the patients, Michael, Anthony, and Kayla….. Honestly when I saw the picture of Kayla in the hospital bed… I WANTED TO SHAVE MY HAIR!!!!!!!!!! Thats how much it means to me! EVERYONE remember it’s not about what we get in return it’s about what you’re giving TO SAVE SOMEONES LIFE!!!!!!

  40. Nikki W.

    Hey Mr. Little.
Something I’ve done for the common good is to ask my dad to ask his workers to donate money to Ride Janie Ride. Another thing I’ll be doing for the common good is to ask for donations by going door on my street-which hasn’t been asked yet-during the Thursday early-dimissal. I hope I can make a diffrence in this cause like all the other people who’ve donated so far. Having so many connections to chemo, leukemia, and cancer in my famly-especially how expensive treatment is-means a lot to me. So I hope that now I can do the favor for others.

  41. Danny.G

Hay a couple of friends and i are planning on having a basketball game/tournament for RJR. All of the money that we’ve raised is for RJR. The Cheerleaders are also having a bake sale on the same day for RJR. everybody is invited!

  42. Mrs. Maass

Way to go, 7th graders! I’m so proud of your efforts and active roles as citizens! Mr. Little, nice job setting up the electronic forum for sharing ideas and inspiration!

  43. Frank L

Go team! We are doing a great job! I think today or Thursday Nicole, Brett, Alyssa(s)and others might go to the mall place and set up a charity table and scour the mall for other people(in front of expensive places)and yea…it’s undecided. We are going to raise billions of dollars!

  44. Abbey C.

Tomorrow I plan to make posters and go door to door asking people to donate to ride Janie Ride. I want to also have my mom ask her co-workers for donations. I aslo ask my family members for donations.

  45. Kyle L.

I really didn’t do a activity for RJR, but I donated money. For the common good I helped clean a park. I found many things like bags, soccer balls, and footballs. Also, for the common good I volunteered at my church to help poor families get food and gifts for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The volunteers had to collect the wonderful gifts from donating families. Then we carry the gifts to the cars of the unfortunate families. And if any of the families don’t show up we put the leftover gifts into the trucks of organizations that give the gifts to other people.

  46. Emma H.

Last wednesday at my taekwondo studio, we had a fundraiser for MS. The theme was for the instructers to get pied in the face for ten dollars each. Me, being an instructer, had to get pied. I got about 8 pies in the face. It really wasn’t that fun at all, but it was all for a good cause. This weedend, me and my best friend are going around each of our neighborhoods to raise money for ride janie ride. I can’t wait to get started, and do more things for the community.

  47. Peter P.

Whats up Mr. Little. To tell you the truth I’m not realy happy on my progress because I did not make enough money on Tuesday. I only made $11. I was realy depressed, but I’ll keep on trying! Now here is a qeustion. What would you do if someone said no to you and a donation? I’ll comment back soon student/asstant Peter!

  48. Angela C and Allison S

Last year Allison and I helped out the Feed My Starving Children Foundation. What this organisation does is that people come in and help package meals. The meals are shipped to places that need food like Haiti and other poor countries. We went with her church and it was actually really fun. We packaged enough food to feed 54 children for a year. When we went home that day and we felt really good for doing something for the common good. Everyone should try this out because it makes you feel like you can make a difference in children’s lives.

  49. Allison S. and Angela C.

This past Monday, during Social Studies class, Mr. Little was talking to us all about Ride Janie Ride. We had homework that was due the next day. Mr. Little said he would excuse us from the assignment of we did something for RJR. Angela and I talked about getting together to do something for this. We got together after school and made a poster for RJR. We then we went around the neighborhood for two hours and collected $200! That night we went home feeling like we made a huge difference in 3 people’s lives. Which we did. These people deserve to live a normal life. It was more than just being excused from a homework assignment, it was about helping others out.

  50. Charlotte S.

On 4/25/10 April Wendling and I are going to go to her church. I have spent a lot of this week making little keychains to sell to the youngsters at her church. She is also making little Popsicle stick-crosses that can glow in the dark or glitter on them. The keychains that I am making are going to be very colorful. That is so that the kids at April’s will be attracted to what we are selling. Who doesn’t love colors?! it is going to be great. We will have colorful posters and fliers!:D

  51. Pete:

Do NOT feel depressed – you’ve single handedly started a movement here, and have motivated all of this. I’m so proud of you and what you’ve done. Anything else is just “gravy!”

People will say no. It’s sad, but don’t worry about it – move on to the next person!!

  52. Mrs. Foellmer

You guys are awesome!! Outstanding job, everyone. I admire your generous spirit and your overall caring and concern. All of us are SO fortunate, and … doesn’t it feel great to help others?!?
    Way to go, guys!
    ~ Mrs. Foellmer

  53. Abrielle J.

Hey, Mr. Little, Me and Richie went out for two hours to raise $117 at my neighbors houses around the town. We got many doors slammed in our faces and many people sayed we were freaks asking for money just for (Justin Beiber(not)posters) candy or pop or something. But their was this nice lady who was going to give us $20 but when she went to go get it she told us to watch her dog(Wolfie) who had just ran out of the house and usually he runs into the street but since he didn’t, she gave us an extra $20. Alot of people gave us money because they know Kayla. I am also going to go with Toni tommorrow to Hisdale Train station and probably sell cookies to people to get money and then I might come back home and go to my grandmas house to get more money. Keep on Truck’n everyone. Congrats to everyone who helped us make over $2000! Keep Going!!!!!!

  54. Amber M

Unfortunately i was unable to fund raise last week because my sister had twisted her wrist and i had to watch her while my parents were at work. Luckily she is better now and i am able to fund raise! Today i am going around my neighborhood with two of my friends,Brianna and Kelsey, and my sister Jazmin. My younger sister was friends with Kayla. We will be going door-door. We are super excited to start right after school! =]

  55. Sam C

This year has given many of us chances to perform acts of common good. This year i have participated in 85 hours of community service. So far i have participated in the Memory Walk and raised $500 by selling my own art , i spent my saturday volunteering for the Winter Band Invitational, i visit the Nursing Baptist Home occasionally too for Memory Bridge, and now I have ride janie ride (: So far for this fundraiser i have raised $100 and am going to be out tomorrow trying to raise more. I think from all the opportunities we’ve been gven this year, we’ve all learned that no matter how young we are , we can make great achievements for society. :D

  56. That’s the best part, Mrs. Foellmer: these kids REALLY feel good about helping everyone. So few of them are doing this for a “reward,” but for the desire to help others. It’s such a special thing to see!

  57. Toni P.

Me, Abrielle, my mom, and my brother are all going to go downtown on our half day. I made a poster to bring with us to let people know that we are raising money for Ride Janie Ride. I am so happy that we can help Kayla,Anthony, and Michael especially because my younger brother is friends with Kayla and we hear a lot about what she has gone through. I hope we all continue to raise money for RJR and I can’t wait to go downtown and raise some more!!!

  58. Matt

    Hi Mr. Little.
I think RJR is a great idea for rasing money for people who need it. It is even more special since the money goes to people that are close to the district. I have participated in a lot of fundraising events at school and out of school. A few years ago, I sold popcorn through boy scouts. All the money went to the American Red Cross for hurricane Katrina. In school I gave money to Alzhimers. I have not went door to door asking for money for RJR. But I have gave money to RJR. I hope as a school we can reach $10,000 for RJR. That would be incredible.

  59. Richie R

On monday afteroon me and my friend went door to door in our neighberhood for an hour and a half. In total that day we raised 117$!! In total my hombase now has 388$!!! This weekend I’m also going to do a car wash with a couple of my friends to raise evn more money than we already had. In total our school has raised over 5,000$. In the past few days we have raised over 1,000 in 2 days. This weekend I’m also going to try and raise some money at my church with my cousins. My cousins also agreed to help me and they don’t even go to my school.

  60. Andrew b

What i’m going to do for the Common Good is that my family is going to have a family party soon. I am going to make a small poster on a jar and go around asking my relitives for money. I also think my family will donate because I have a 2-year-old cousin who is very sick with a heart disease. My family will donate money because they know how hard and sad it is with a sick family member.

  61. Tayolr R.

We i was a church last year i went to this thing called Pads it is like a gathering for people that dont have a homes so they come here and they sleep over in the moning they are still here but someone eles takes the job in the moning but i just help out at night time so we set up the beds and cook the food at night time it is a very fun guathering to do it. It is fun to help out someone in need that is the best part. Me and my other friends were in this thing called barnes and we had help a lot of people in the past like we made blakes for the people who had a fire in her house also we sold lots of cookies and the money went to a good cause .

  62. Marwa C.

Tomorrow (Thursday, the early dismissal), a group of people and I will help the Ride Janie Ride foundation. Our donation for the Ride Janie Ride Foundation is to create fliers that describe the organization and explain the significance of Ride Janie Ride and why it would be helping the common good by donating it. After school, we would walk to local shops such as CVS, Walgreens, and Caribou Coffee (basic places where people might regularly stop by) and ask the manager permission to display the fliers at the register for people to donate. We would have added the webpage where donations could be made on the flier since it is impractical to collect money directly at the spot.
Next, we would go around the community (prepared with pre-written short speeches about the cause and why people should donate, and dressed in Lakeview spirit) to promote the cause and get people to, if not donate, at least start thinking about the cause and why helping the common good could do so much to the community.
Another (debatable) idea is that we would create an attention-getting, affective banner of the website and foundation to hold up and promote the Ride Janie Ride cause in front of Lakeview Jr. High. People seeing that Lakeview students arem themselves, taking action, being devoted, and helping the common good might change their views and get them to donate a even a little for the cause–sometimes a little can mean a lot. If about fifteen people donate as much as $10 each, we could raise more than a hundred dollars!
All in all, helping the Ride Janie Ride Foundation is more than just “collecting money”. It’s raising awareness of the people who are suffering through things we may never experience, it is getting people to take a moment and think about the common good and how it can affect the community in great ways, and it is helping people that are closer to us than we may actually think.

Hey! It’s Ose(Rose)! I recently went around my neighborhood and explained to people the situation these people are going through and why they needed money and when i showed them the poster with the people on it and told them what they were stuggling through, every person i told’s face just went into complete attention and “aw”. They all seemed to want to help, even if they could only give a few dollars, it was still helpful. Thursday, April 21st 2010(tomorrow) Jeannie, Serenity, Miyax, Kailee, Amanda, maybe others, and me are going around Miyax’s neighborhood to raise money for the organization! We are all excited to do this and we aren’t going to split the money between all our homebase’s because we don’t care who’s homebase has the most money or who get’s pancakes, we just care that we are helping these people and that they get the money to help them through the stuggle of their blood cancer. That same day all those same people are going to Jeannie and Serenity’s park to clean it up and Jeannie’s dad is donating $100! I wouldtalks about raising money and motivates us to keep doing these great deads. Thank you Mr.Little! And good luck Ride Janie Ride!

I Africa I helped old people by holding their hands and crossing the road. And I help donate $8.00 to ride janie ride and I hope to donate more.

  65. Serenity S. and Amanda T.

Hey lil’ J! We are going to go door to door asking for donations. Also we are going to have a bake sale to help raise money for ride janie ride! Serenity has already raised 100 dollars with Jeannie. We are also going to help raise money for the breast cancer society by joining a relay. Amanda has also donated money to the cause (ride janie ride). Our goal is to raise at least 100 dollars!

  66. aLeX z.

    Mr. Little,

On Monday me, Jack M, and Austin A, went out and raised $29 for RJR in just 20 minutes. We’re planning on possibly going out the rest of this week, and maybe the weekend too! And Mr. Little, you did a great job on inspiring everyone to go collect money for ride janie ride. ;)

  67. Jeannie L.

Ride Janie has inspired me to raise a lot of money for this organization. Together as a school we have raised $5,200 and the whole 7th grade raised $1,500 in just one day. I personally know Kayla O’Leary and many others with cancers and this touches me personally. Serenity and I went around our neighborhood last Thursday and raised $100. We explained who the recipients are and where the money goes. On Monday Jacky, Serenity, and I raised $30. On Thursday this week Serenity, Kailee, Amanda, Rose, Miyax, and I are going to walk around Miyax’s nieghborhood and on that same day Taylor, Serenity, Miyax, Amanda, and I are going to clean my neighborhood park. My dad is going to give $100 for his appreciation to my community and dedication to this fundraiser! Also everyone is going to give Plato’s Closet some of our used clothes and receive money in return for them. We are going to turn that money into Ride Janie Ride! I believe that Lakevew will be able to raise $10,000 by Monday afternoon. I hope that we help raise money for Ride Janie Ride next year because we are capable to raise twice as much!!:):)

Danny P :I got some money from my family for the ridejanieride, and helped teach some 2nd graders in my church about god. I also had my CCD class with me so it was a group project and we told them to make what they see as god…..out of plato. then we gave them some prayer rocks and told them that we would pray for them during their first Communion.

    it’s play-dough, but great job!!!

  70. Carrie C

Today I am going around Prairieview and asking for donations. I also go around my building and ice rink too. I hope to reach a minimum of $100 so that i can help Kayla,Anthony, and Michael. For the common good, i have helped out at our church warming center, donated clothes to Plato’s and the Salvation Army, teach skating lessons a few days a week. I want to continue doing these things and hope to get even more money. I want us to reach $10,000!

  71. Ava P.

Hola. This is Ava. I’ve been calling people about the oragnization because I haven’t had much time to go out and do something. I also don’t have a special talent so I can’t do that, but I’m trying.

    <3 Ava

  72. Sam T.

    I

Cole C. :Unfortunatly, I havent gotten around to raising any money for RIDE JANIE RIDE. I hate carrying change or having to much money with me anyway so I got something out of it too.

hey Mr.Little how are you? Well we are learning about the common good and i have a few stories of my own. Well before i lived here I lived in India for about 9 years. So we used to donate money and clothes and food all the time in the poor areas, there once was a huge flood there so there was a stream filled with all kinds of interesting things and also some unfortunate people. So we helped the people while the current being soo strong pulling us away but we tied ourselves and rescued a few people. It was the most exiting time of my life, well i was only 8 so i guess that counts right? Well I do almost anything to help underprivileged people because well at one time i was one too. So when I moved here I went to my public library and signed up to be a part time volunteer. This usually takes up most of my weekends. I usually tutor kids, read to disabled kids, work at the daycare center @ the local Y.M.C.A. When charity events come up like ride janie ride i do my best to contribute. I have already donated to the cause. This is such a moving thing for me because I have never experienced anything as extraordinary like this and i am really proud to be a part of. Thank you for all the motivation and help you have given us throughout this time. So I hope you contribute too!

  74. Danny K

During this past week I Donated $5 to Ride Janie Ride. Also, I helped take care of my little brother for free. Although I could have taken the money, I remembered what common good ment. So, I told my mom that I didn’t want to be paid. Although I wanted the money, I knew that I was doing the right thing.

  75. Sarah R:P

Rachel G. and I are going to bake cookies and make a poster with the Ride Janie Ride’s Kayla, Michael and Anthony and other info. We will go to the library and go door to door in our neighborhoods and tell them about Ride Janie Ride and that the donated money goes directly to the patients. We will ask them if they’d like to donate and then if they donate, we will give them a free cookie and/or brownie :).

  76. Courtney

    Mr. Little-

Today after musical practice Maureen and I are going around my neighborhood to ask people for donations. I am really happy that 7th grade has raised so much money – $3,000. The school has raised $5,000, which is amazing!!! Maureen and I are hoping to raise a lot of money and we are very excited!! It makes me really sad to hear about Kayla, Anthony , and Michael. I hope that our school can help them!!! I am really excited to see the people come in on Monday and I am ready to see the big check! ( Hopefully with $10,000 written on it)! I think our school did a REALLY good job in raising money. I am happy to see that not all of the kids are only bringing in money because of the prizes we are awarded! The Ride-Janie-Ride Foundation is AMAZING!!!

  77. Rachel G

This Thursday, Sarah and I will be going to the library to ask people for donations to Ride Janie Ride. We also will be making a poster with the pictures of Anthony, Kayla, and Michael explaining why we are doing what we are. For the people who donate money, we will provide them with a homemade cookie that we will be making :).
    GO LAKEVIEW!!

  78. Miyax Leon

    Dear Mr Little,
to help support the foundation of Ride Janie Ride me and others started brain storming. We thought what was a good way to help raise money? So Jeannie and Braxton thought of the idea to have a basketball game and raise money that way. Me and Serenity thought of some things that we could host during the basketball game and we made a plan for it as well. We had to discuss this with Mr. Windsor and ask him if it was okay if we did it . He said no. This really did bumm us out but as you like to say, never make small plans. So me, Serenity, Kailee, and Jeannie decided that since Thursday is half a day we would go house to house and raise money. I also had this intelligent idea of taking the clothes that i dont use and exchanging it for money at Plato’s closet and give it to Ride Janie Ride. We might also have a car wash if its not so nippy out. We were going to have a bake sale but we decided that, that wasnt such a bright idea. We hope to raise atleast $250. When i heard that our school had raised about $5,000 so far i was speechless. I was so proud of everyone who had raised money cause it really hit me hard when i heard about Kayla, Michael, and Anthony. It did because some of my family memebers went through the same things that they went through, and i know that they are going through a hard time. I really hope that we raise alot of money, to help them out :)

  79. Ava P.

    This is Ava,
I haven’t had much time to go door to door for Ride Janie Ride, but in January I had to do this PADS thing for church. You go to a church and feed and hospitalize homeless people. It makes me feel great. <3 Ava

  80. Zach K

Tommorow, I’m going to put jars that say “Ride Janie Ride” on them in local restaurants. I hope I get a good amount of money from it. I’m also going to donate 20 dollars out of my own money. I’ve only put in 5$ so far. Also, last year, I went to soup kitchen in Chicago to go serve food to homeless people who were there. I was surprised at how many homeless people were there. I guess I never really thought about them before! I’m going to do the same thing this Summer. My dad encouraged me to do it because it’s part of a program they have at his job. I think he’s also going to donate some money to RJR. I hope that Anthony, Kayla, and Micheal get enough money to care for them. :D . Good luck!

  81. Collin C.

The fact that our school has raised over $5000 is amazing, especially since half of that was raised by 7th graders! I hope that before this fundraiser is over I can help by donating some money to. For the common good I have sold chocolate bars for my school to help pay for the sports that our school has. I also donate all of my clothes that dont fit me to the poor and the needy! So I think I have really helped the common good but i also hope to donate and participate in the Ride Janie Ride fundraiser!

  82. April W.

Hi everyone! For RIDE JANIE RIDE, Charlotte S. and I are selling glitter and glow crosses and rainbow keychains at my church this Sunday. Another thing I have done for the common good is volunteer chess tutoring at my library over the summer every Tuesday. I also assist in the children’s service for first to sixth grade kids every Sunday. Also, one time for my church’s missionary fundraiser, I raised $150 by selling the glitter and glow crosses mentioned above. I have no idea how much money Charlotte and I will be able to raise, but it could be well over $200. As a school, lets work together to raise $10,000 for RIDE JANIE RIDE and help Mrs. Nino’s brother in law!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  83. Froaty

After early dismissal on Thursday I am going to go around my neighborhood and tell people what can be accomplished if they just add a few bucks into my envelop. I think that if we were the people who had cancer the REAL people that have it would to the same thing to give us a second chance at life. We will easily be able to get the 10,000 dollars that we are hoping for. LET’S GO!

Even though I haven’t had the time to collect money, I took out twenty dollars of my own money. On thursday. I’m going to walk around the neighborhood and colect money for the Ride Janie Ride foundation. I can’t believe how much money we have raised. We already have over $5,000. We are doing a great job keep it up, and we still have until monday to raise money.

  86. Tommy W.

Hello my fellow classmates i’m really happy about the money we raised as a school even though were not done yet I think we can double it without a doubt. On thursday I plan on going around my neighborhood and asking for money for the RJR foundation and if there are many good spirits then I will collect a lot of money. I really think we can double our money if all the students work hard. I hope to raise a lot of money on Thursday if I work hard I probably can raise a lot. I congradulate all the students and thank them for bringing the amounts of money they did. Also I want to thank alll of the teachers for the donations they made so in all i want to thank and congradulate everyone for thier hard work and for taking thier time to work for the money and go around asking for money.

  87. Brett C

I haven’t donated to Ride Janie Ride yet, but I’m trying to get some friends together and go to a store and look for people to donate money. I don’t know if we can though, and if we can’t then I will donate my own money.
For the common good kids from student council and I help out at market day. It was a lot of fun even though all we were doing was putting food into boxes.

  88. Joe E

I think it is so amazing that we can raise over $5,000. I helped my church by selling chocolate bars for a fundraiser. Also I helped collect food for homeless people aroung Thanksgiving time. Hopefully we can raise even more!

  89. Jack M

In May, My mom and I are going to a homeless shelter. My moms a chef so shes going to help cook while im going to serve the food. Thier will also be members from our church their to.Im also helping cleaning up the outside of our church. I cant wait to see the total amount of money we raise at the end of the week!!

  90. Baller aka Taylor J

Hey lil J! Ride Janie Ride is a great organization has inspired me alot! I can relate to Kayla O’Leary, Anthony Nino, and Michael Polley’s family because I have a cousin who just got diagonsed with Lymphoma this year. We are trying to do a fundraiser for Joey and raise money like alot of students here at Lakeview did or are going to do. This Thursday on our half day and Me, Miyax, Kailee, Amanda, Serenity, and Jeannie are going around our neighborhoods and collecting money. After going around the neighborhood we are going to clean up Serenity and Jeannie’s park and Jeannie’s dad has agreed to give us $100 for cleaning the park. I really hope that we raise alot of money so we can reach the goal of $10,000 as a school! Thanks for supporting us through everything especially after our charity basketball game got turned down:( We wont let you down!! And hopefully Justin Bieber can come sing to us(me) because of our COMMON GOOD!!! That we are doing for people!

  91. Jerena J

hey Mr Little, i think we al are doiing an AMAZING job!!! Im gonna ask my parents if they can ask people at there work to try and help raise money for RJR cant wait tosee the total amount of $$ that the 7th grade raised!

  92. Julie

Ya Tara, I remeber that. I gave you i think $25 im not sure. From my family that same year, i thought that was a great idea, i told my family about it too, i got presents and gift cards for my b-day but i also got $ so the next day me and my mom went to the animal shelter and turned in about $100. It’s not alot compared to you but i took my time and money and for a good cause. Nice job tara :] pat on the back. haha

  93. Joe M

I will start printing tons of fliers today, which I have designed the fliers the previous night. Then, on Thursday, I will go to as many stores as possible and try to hang up the fliers there. I also have cleaned up parks on marches that I have to go on.

  94. Sydney D.

This Thursday, for early dismissal, I am planning to go around my neihborhood collecting donations for Ride Janie Ride. I plan do to everything in my power to raise enough money to help the blood cancer victims.

  95. Cody B.

Ride Janie Ride is a great organization that I am happy to be part of. To raise this much money shows student’s motivation- even past the rewards. The $100 that we hoped we would raise to earn a pancake breakfast seems like pennies now. I can’t wait to see the final total. For the common good, I have donated non-perishable items and money to our church which were sent to homeless and needy people in Chicago. My family and I have also served food at soup shelters downtown. One of the biggest things my family and I do that has a big impact is donating old clothes. Over the years, we must’ve donated 1,000 old coats, shirts, and pants through the Salvation Army and Amvets. The clothes we send in go to people who need them, as they no longer fit my brother and I. I’m glad our school can make such a huge impact on these three lives.

  96. Ramiz R.

At first, I really didn’t know what to do for Ride Janie Ride. Then one day at school, Mr. Little told all of us about the great and productive things to help these 3 cancer patients. So when I went home, I watched an episode of That 70’s Show and then went door to door to help raise money. I knocked on what seemed like a billion doors (most of the time to be let down). Sometimes, I would get a very generous person who would donate a great amount of money. I haven’t brought in the money I’ve raised, but I hope that it will help Kayla, Anthony, and Mike.

  97. Mike T.

First I helped people in Ride Janie Ride by donating some money I earned. Also, I helped an elderly woman in my neighborhood because her husband just passed away. I mowed her lawn and shoveled her driveway, so she didn’t have to pay to get it done. I also played in acharity hockey game against a team of deaf people. It helped raise money to help pay for some of their medical bills and other stuff. In Prarieview, as most people did, my family and I donated presents to give to needy families. I plan to get money from my neighborhood and at my dad’s work, to donate for Ride Janie Ride. I’m excited to see how much money our school can raise.

  98. Nicole E.

Hey Mr. Little! For Ride Janie Ride, I might be going somewhere with a few of my friends after school thursday to raise money! It’s not for sure yet but we’re still planning! After school today I’m going to see if my Mom and Dad will donate money. I can’t believe how much the 7th grade alone has already raised! This has inspired me so much! Hopefully the 6th and 8th graders will step up and show some more common good! I hope that we reach our goal of $10,000 or more! It makes me happy when I know that I’m helping people for a great cause. Good job 7th graders! I babysit for the common good. I have also donated money for Haiti relief.

  99. Matt "Matt" S

Hiya Mr. Little! I’m going to raise some money for Ride Janie Ride by posting fliers around the Walmart/Panera mall and other places. It should be a lot of fun cause I’m going with friends!

  100. Michael B

Heyyy Mr. Little. Whats up freash?? Well i am here in your class and imma tell you what i’ve done for the COMMON GOOD(<—vocab word right there).Well for Ride Janie Ride I've brought in money and i plan on going around my hood to get some donations. in the past my family has brought in food to our church and then me and my dad would deliver the food to less fortunate people in westmont(I love that place)on special days.well im gonna try to raise money today. that is all

  101. Matt "Matt" S

    Joe M :
I will start printing tons of fliers today, which I have designed the fliers the previous night. Then, on Thursday, I will go to as many stores as possible and try to hang up the fliers there. I also have cleaned up parks on marches that I have to go on.

    YES, IT WILL BE AWESOME.

  102. Joe C

I am proud of what our grade did in the last week and a half and I still have faith that we can double it and raise over $10,000, 7th graders are just plan beastly. So on the first week of the Ride Janie Ride program I raised over $50 by talking to my friends and some of my neighbors. And when I was 5 I went to the homeless shelter with my grandma in westchester.

  103. Julie

Hi Mr. Little. I think we are one of the best schools we’re taking OUR time, and OUR money to donate to such a worthy cause. I can’t wait to see all the participants faces when Lakeview Jr. High gives them all over $5,000!!! I can’t believe how someone would get off the computer and X-boxes ect. to do something that’s not even for them,I still to this day donate money to animal centers, and multi-needs organizations. These people and animals need it, compared to healthy people who sit around all day on their lazy butts doing nothing. I think that our school is making a difference, and will push other schools to do the same. With all the people and schools I’m not surprised that we can make over $10,000 it will take a lot of work and time, but when people see what our school is doing and how much money we raised, they’ll make a difference too.

  104. Alexadndra

Ride Janie Ride: On Thursaday, April 22, 2010 Kelsie M. are going to Coldstone. Outside we will set up a table. There will be posters and flyers. (2:00 if you want to come!) Plus I’ve donated $7. I have more money at home to give as well.
Other things I have done: I have donated clothing, and objects. Me and a friend have cleaned the park multipple times, so that they are free of liter. Not to mention that at Christmas time I have gone to nursing homes. At the moment, my cousin is tryying to quit smoking. Everyday I send her a motivational quote, video, ect. During the winter I have shovled my neighbor’s driveway. When there are fundraisers I have always donated or done something to help. During the summer, I have read to blind helping dogs. Enough for now!

  105. Sydney D.

One thing I have done for the Common Good would be spending time with my Uncle Chip, who has special needs. He is the happiest person I have ever met, and I enjoy spending time with him and his friends with the same types of disorders. I love to help them out with their everyday tasks such as cooking, doing puzzles, and playing new games. Whenever I go to visit, I always plan to do puzzles, play games, and watch the Cubs game. (Take that Mr. Little!!!!!)I love spending time with my Uncle and I never thought it could be considered doing something for the Common Good.

  106. Julie

Hey Nicole I think that is a great idea:)

  107. Eric W.

I haven’t donated to Ride Janie Ride yet but I’ll probably help out with someone else’s charity plan.In the past I have helped set up parties at Elizabith Ide and donated anually to AMVETS. In addition I have done a charity run for the AMA.In the future I hope to do more charity work with my friends. ~m/`

  108. I help the common good in a few different ways. To start off, I put money in a donation box every week, as a tradition. Also, we donate old clothes, and I normally give money to homeless people when I go walking in Chicago. I plan to go raising donations for RJR by going door to door.I’m really surprised there’s been such a big outcome to this fundraiser, since normally we don’t get as many donations from as many people in as large a sum.

  109. Lyle L

I donated $10.00 to Ride Janie Ride. Previously, I have helped in a toy and food drive at my church. I helped to take the toys/food out of the cars and brought them in. We then brought it to the people recieving the toys/food.

  110. Jacob B

I have helped ride janie ride by passing out fliers at CVS and walgreens. I also think it is cool what senity,Jeanie, and friends are doing. and how cool is it that Peter P is raising $300 dollars all on his own. Anyway keep doing great and keep on keepin’ on. Peace.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  111. Jon P

I am going to go to ampm and wendys with danny annesee an possibly eric tommorow to raise money. I am also having my dad ask people at his work for donations. But my family cannot donate because we are paying off my dads hospital bill beccause he had a heart attack.

  112. Kyla S

Last December my 5th grade sister’s girl scout troop had a stall to sell holiday presents. I helped. We made ornaments, jewelry, and smelly, decorated, lights to sell at a party at someone’s house. We made over $600 then went caroling. The last house we went to was Kayla O’Leary’s house. After singing, we gave her one of each of the things we sold. Then each of us gave her an awesome hat to wear when she lost her hair. Last but not least, we gave her 100% of our earnings to buy a wig. Later, Mrs. Kasher (the troup leader) called the American Cancer Society and, when they heard what we did, gave Kayla a wig for free!!! :D

I am happy to be a person who helps the common good, and donates to such a great organization. What I have done is donated $10 of my own money and am still raising and collecting money for this amazing cause. It is for the common good because it is helping people less fortunate than us, and maybe saving their lives. I also helped the common good by giving money to people in Haiti and giving my clothes and money to homless people as well. I think if we keep up with caring for these people, we can easily reach our outstanding goal of $10,000. Soryy its so short my other one got erased.

    Mr Little-

After reharsel for the musical me and courtney are walking around her neiborhood to raise money for ride Janie rid. We are very excited. When I heard about Kayla, Anthony, and Micheal I was very upset. When I learned that we were raising money to change these peoples lives I was very happt. Im very excited that we get to meet the people whos lives were changing so much. Im very happy to see that alot of kids are raising money just not to win prizes. About a tyear ago aor girlscout troup was supposed to go on a trip. That trip never happened. We had $500 left. I told my mom about RJR and I told her that it would be a good idea idea to give to RJR. So we did. I tink Ride Janir Ride is an awewsome charity!

Hey Mr. Little! I think it is phenomenal how much money we have raised for the Ride Janie Ride Foundation! For the Foundation today and tomorrow I will go to my neighborhood door-to-door and ask for some donations.. I think what some of the 7th graders are doing, saving there money and turn it in on Friday, is a great opportunity to collect more and more money. I also think that Lakeview has done an awesome job, and I bet we could reach $10,000 by Friday! I can’t wait to see the expression’s on Kayla’s, Michaels’s, and Anthony’s face! (: Also for the common good I have participated in Memory Walk, which was for the people with Alzheimer’s. I also have joined a club in school, Memory Makers, in which we go to Nursing Homes and talk to the elderly! I hope that we make Ride Janie Ride an unforgettable event! :), :D

  116. Saule G. :D

well..my other 1 never loaded. Whenever i grow out of my old clothes or i don’t wear them anymore, I donate them to the Salvation Army (instead of throwing the clothes away.) I think everyone is doing an outstanding job! Nice job Peter! Mr.Little is right, you r an inspiration. Also, nice job Baaba! That’s really nice of you! I also joined the RJR facebook page :D

btw-I ordered a pen from Sara!

  117. Kristine

I will raise money for ride janie ride by going to naperville, because i know a lot of people there. I might go with some of my friends that live there, because I told them about ride janie ride and they felt really bad for the little kid, and I did too. My friends and I will try to earn money as much money as I can to help them. :)

  118. kaileeeee :D

Well my first stuipd comment didn’t send, thanks for that. ;) Well, anyways tomorrow on the half day, Miyax, Serenity, Amanda, Jeannie, rose, and I are going to have a bake sale and all the money we make will be donated to Ride Janie Ride! We will also, be going to Playdoes (I can’t spell that) closet with old clothes and then all the money we make from our clothes we’re going to also donate. Aside from Ride Janie Ride, my mom volenteers at the Breast Cancer Society and someone who also volenteers there brought up a realy that you get a group and you set up tents arounf the DGS track, and find a way to get people to donate money to you and all the money you make goes to the Breast Cancer Society. I will be taking place in that along with, Miyax, Serenity, Amanda, Rose, and others. These are a few things to help people who need it, I plan to help a lot more. (MY LAST COMMENT WAS LONGER!) :D

  119. Mrs. Nino

I cannot even begin to tell you all how wonderful you are! Your dedication and generosity is amazing! I know that Anthony, Kayla, and Michael are all grateful for your efforts, and regardless of how much money you raise, you have made a difference!!!

  120. Niki C. (:

Hey, I just went in my neighborhood, and raised around $70.00. I’m going to go tomorrow too! (Just thought I’d share that little information with y’all! :))

  121. Rachel K.

For the common good I go to my park and clean it up. Every year my park does a “Clean Up the Park Day” and I love participating. It makes me feel so good to know that I am helping the Earth. Animal species are going extinct from eating people’s trash–and the literers (Is that a word?) are too lazy to trash/recycle the items!
The team pitches in and picks up trash and recycles paper products. Animals won’t accidentally eat stuff they shouldn’t this way.
Every month my family and I give old clothes, books, etc. to Amvets, the Salvation Army, Purple Heart, and Sharing Connections, companies that give used items to people who really need it. It makes me feel really good.

On Thursday I will be going to the Wendy’s and am/pm with my friends Jon Paveza and Eric Wynne. We are going to try and raise as much money as possible for Ride Janie Ride. Danny and Eric’s giraffe ~m/’

Yesterday I went door to door raising money for ride janie ride. Also every year during easter tanksgiving and christmas I help at my church by sorting and loading food into trucks. also at chritmas I help out at my churches gift drive for kids with families who cant afford to buy gifts.

  124. Jennifer S.

Unfortunatly, I never had time during the week to raise money for Ride Janie Ride. But because of that, I donated $40 and I’m planning to donate $60. Also, I might go around the neighborhood on my free time to try to raise money instead of just donating. For the common good, I sometimes go to the park to pick up trash thats around the trees with my friends and sometimes my brother.

    Mr. Little,
In 2008, my mom was diagnosed with Breat Cancer, and we were all scared. After a long period of treatment and radiation, the cancer was gone. Last year my mom and dad participated in the Susan G. Comen Breast Cancer 3-day walk. They had to raise over $8000 in order to participate. It took a lot of fundraising and donations. I played an important role in that too. I donated my babysitting money to help collect money. I also asked for donations from my friends and family. This helped the common good of the less fortunate cases of breast cancer. When I grow up, i want to do the walk and raise the money.

  126. Jill Hansen

Last night I went with my parents to distribute food to needy families at the Hinsdale Community Food Pantry. It was really fun helping other people and making a difference towards the common good. It was amazing how many people right in our own area need help like the food pantry.

  129. Abrielle J.

Hey Mr. Little. Today for our day off Toni Rae and I went to downtown Hinsdale and we raised $113 then we went to diffrent neighborhoods and we raised about $300!!! Awesome right? We also saw this weird homeless man who we didn’t know was homeless at first and when we asked him for money he said ” Gimmie $1.00 gimmie .50″ I was so scared. I guess I should’ve know since he had a ski mask at winter cap on if like 60 degree weather. And one lady got all mad at us after she didn’t donate any money.Overall it was really fun! See you tommorrow!!!!!!!!

    Hello Mr. Little!

Today was an incredible day for the Ride Janie Ride Foundation! We knew the kids were doing well in their fundraising efforts by visiting your blog, as well as, Mrs. Myer’s blog.

Little did we know that we would all be totally blown away today by the efforts of your students! 13,000.00 is an absolutely HUGE amount of money! Unexpected and very much appreciated by the board and our families.

In four years, we have come in contact with SO many kind and generous people. But this is a first…I applaud everyone in District #66 for their efforts. Thank you, Mr. Little and please thank all of your students.

    Sincerely,
    Teresa Smets

There is only one word that can describe what our school has accomplished: WOW!!!!! I was amazed at how generous everyone was (especially 7th grade). I still can’t believe we raised $13,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We like, doubled Lakeview’s old fundraising record!!!!!!! I’m so happy I could simply be a part of RIDE JANIE RIDE.

P.S. Last Sunday, Charlotte and I raised $80.17! Yay for us, and HORAH! for Lakeview!
